Rarotonga is the main island, and is the home of the
international airport and seat of government.
Rarotonga is known as a high island and was formed from a
long-dormant underwater volcano. On Rarotonga you can join a
mountain trek across the island (there is no road over the
mountains!) or explore the marine life in the reef - snorkelling
and diving are amazing around Rarotonga.
You can take an island tour and visit the neat villages and
picturesque beaches that are spread around the island. It only take
about an hour to drive right round the island, but you'll find
so many wonderful distractions on the way, it could take you
days! A brand new attraction is the Te Vara Nui Village, a
traditionally built Polynesian village, that offers a
unique interactive cultural experience. Named after a
beautiful Rarotongan Maiden, Te Vara, who performed throughout the
Pacific, the Village has been created to allow locals and visitors
to relive the memories, traditions and the history of the Cook
Islands culture. Tours showcase local artisans and
craftspeople exibiting traditional crafts, such as carving,
weaving, making traditional costumes and cooking local
foods. Interaction is a key theme and guests are invited to
join in and learning the Cook Islands way. In the evening,
they perform an amazing Island show with flaming torches and
dancers and musicians on floating and fixed stages throughout the
waterfall gardens, preceeded by a traditional Umu
Kai buffet. An experience not to be missed.
