The Islander Hotel is probably one the very few hotels that can call itself an airport hotel AND a beachfront hotel, and be totally accurate. Situated just outside the airport perimeter, so close you can easily walk to it, but right on the north coast beach, this is definitely a unique selling point.
Currently a small hotel with just 13 rooms, they will shortly undergo some large expansions, and refurbishments, starting sometime in early 2017, that will make the accommodation block into a 2-storey building and more than double their rooms to 40. The restaurant, dining room and outdoor dining terrace will also be refurbished, upgraded and expanded greatly. Once the work is complete, the Islander Hotel will be a nice, modern hotel for an overnight stay, either before departure or after arrival.
Once the work in the hotel in complete, we will update the page with the new information and gallery.
At present, the 13 Guest (Cabana) Rooms are spacious and provide either 2 king beds, 4 twin beds or a combination, modern tiled ensuite shower room with toilet, vanity sink, bathrobes, hairdryer and complimentary toiletries, air conditioning, ceiling fans, satelite TV with in-house movies, IDD telephone, sitting area, tea and coffee making facilities, fridge, complimentary snorkelling equipment and beach views.
The open-air Islander Coco Grill Restaurant offers tasty, simple fare, with fresh salads, seafood, burgers and freshly-made pizzas, overlooking the pool, sun terrace and beach. The Tiki Bar serves cocktails, premium wines and freshly brewed coffees on the terrace, and the Hula Bar, right on the beach, offers an 'all day happy hour', with the cheapest beer on the island, and is a popular place for locals and visitors alike to meet up and enjoy a drink, watch the sunset, or the live entertainment around the pool's Tiki Terrace.
This small hotel doesn't have a huge amount of facilities, but they do offer snorkelling equipment in your room, a nice beachside pool surrounded by sun decks and the beach right on the doorstep. It's also in a great location to get to and from the airport, being within walking distance, and close to everything else Rarotonga has to offer.
If you are on a budget, The Islander is great for an overnight stay before or after a flight, and we look forward to seeing the new property when the construction is completed next year.

Currently, there are very limited International flight connections to and from the Cook islands. All international flights operate into Rarotonga and there are domestic connection flights into Aitutaki, Atiu and Mangaia.
The main international carrier is Air New Zealand, with direct air service provided six days a week from and to Auckland (currently there is no flight on a Friday), and once a week to and from Los Angeles, currently departing Rarotonga on a Friday arriving LA on the Saturday. The return flight leaves LA on Saturday and arrives Rarotonga on Sunday morning. They operate on a new B777-200ER aircraft, with 26 Business, 40 Premium Economy and 246 Economy seats. The Premium Economy seats are the first to be offered on this route.
There is also a year round once a week flight with Air New Zealand between Rarotonga and Sydney, departing Rarotonga on Thursday arriving Sydney on Friday and departing Sydney on Friday arriving in Rarotonga on Friday, operating on a B767-300 aircraft, with 24 Business and 206 Economy seats.
Virgin Australia operate 3 days a week from Auckland to Rarotonga, using a 737 aircraft, departing Auckland on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, arriving in Rarotonga the previous day (as you cross the International dateline), and returning flights Tuesday, Thursday and Friday arriving two days later (cross the International dateline again in the other direction adding a day, plus arriving after midnight into the next day) (schedule as of 15/10/15, subject to change without notice).
Also, for the winter months, (June-October 2016), they will be operating a direct flight Christchurch, on New Zealand's South Island, to Rarotonga. Departing on Saturday and arriving in Rarotonga on Friday (cross the date line), and returning the same day, Friday to arrive back in Christchurch on Sunday (date line and midnight time crossing), this will save visitors having to travel up to Auckland to get to the Cook Islands.
Jetstar,
a new airline starting in New Zealand, started a new flight
schedule from Auckland to Rarotonga in March 2016. At
present, they are planning to operate from and to Auckland on
Tuesday, Saturday and Sunday, with the return flight being the same
days, due to arriving and departing after midnight, and will arrive
back in Auckland the following days, due to crossing the
international dateline.
Air Tahiti
operate up to twice weekly flights from Papeete, Tahiti to
Rarotonga, currently on a Saturday and Thursday. However,
on most weeks they only operate the
Thursday flight!
All
domestic flights within the Cook islands are operate by Air Rarotonga. Their main route
is Rarotonga to Aitutaki, on which they operate up to five daily
services, except Sunday, when only one is operated (up till the end
of 2009 no flights were permitted to operate domestically on a
Sunday).
They also provide frequent services to the other main islands in
the Southern group. However, air access to the Northern group
is currently very restricted, to the point where it is almost
impossible for tourists to book flights, due to the limited seats
that are offered. Quite a lot of the time, the
seats are reserved for Government officials and the local residence
of the Northern islands.
Airline Seat Maps
For most airlines, we can pre-reserve seats for you once your flight booking is confirmed, and will do so as a matter of course. If you would like to have a look at a seat plan for your aircraft, you can check the airlines' own website, or one of the best independent websites for this information is SeatGuru.com, which is part of the Tripadvisor group.
