This boutique property, designed for adults only, is one of the Cook Islands oldest hotels, originally having opened in 1974. But don't let that put you off, as it is the 'oldest' in name only, because in 2006 the Little Polynesian Resort was totally remodelled, and just recently, another refresh and upgrade has taken place in the 14 rooms (September 2016 and winter-spring 2019), as well as updating the food and beverage service.
The 14 room property is situated right on the Beach with direct access to the long yellow sand beach and the shallow lagoon. The resort offers two room categories, Garden Studios and Beachfront Bungalows, both of which were totally refurbished in 2006. They offer light and airy accommodation in ivory and natural woods, with traditional high ceilings and a pandanus leaf thatched roof. All the rooms have had a very recent soft refurbishment (February-May 2016 and spring 2019) giving them all now a fresh, modern Polynesian island feel, and some of the Beach Bungalows will still have some refurbishments, such as new thatched roofs (finishing January 2020) that will carry on for a little longer, but should not affect other guests.
The 4 duplex Garden Studios are located in the gardens behind the Beachfront Bungalows, and have an enclosing wall all the way around, giving complete privacy. The slight negative with this, we would say, is that you have no view, except of your own courtyard, albeit a very pleasant private space. The bungalows have just been upgraded and had a soft refurbishment and offer a modern ensuite shower room and garden bathroom with outdoor shower, and a large open-plan room with 1 King bed, a kitchenette with 2-ring gas burner, microwave, toaster, tea and coffee making facilities and a fridge, sofa and coffee table, TV and doors opening into your courtyard. We feel that for some guests, these may not meet their paradisiacal expectations, but if your budget allows it, the Beachfront Bungalows are wonderful, and highly recommended. Located amongst the palm trees right on the sands' edge, they have a split level space, with the bathroom to the rear of the bungalow, the bedroom in the middle, and the living room area to the front, that leads out to a very large decking area with private gazebo and large day bed. Both the bedroom and lounge areas have beautiful wooden floors, whilst the bathroom has chic cream tiles. The bathrooms provide a large walk-in shower, double vanity and separate toilet, and outside, a rock shower. The living area offers 1 King bed, 2 day beds, bar fridge, tea and coffee making facilities, sofa and coffee table with doors opening to a large private deck with thatched gazebo over a large day bed and sun loungers with stunning views of the beach and the ocean. Please note, the Beachfront Bungalows will have their roofing replaced between 2nd-20th December 2019, as well as upgrading the pathways and landscaping around the bungalows. They will be closed to guests for this time. The adjoining bungalows will not be used for guests, so as to minimise the sound or view disruption to any guests.
As well as a beautiful sandy beach, the Resort also has a deep blue infinity pool, over which the restaurant has great views. The recently refurbished (2019) open-air restaurant offers a complimentary tropical breakfast buffet each morning, a lunch selection of salads, seafood and bistro-style lighter bites, and an evening menu offering island cuisine and Mediterranean-style options, offering the freshest seafood, local lamb, beef and poultry, as well as vegetarian options. The bar serves a good selection of beers, wine and spirits, as well as a good choice of chilled and frozen cocktails.
The beach offers great access for swimming, snorkelling, kayaking, and any number of other watersports, and nearby you can hire bicycles, go fishing, play golf, or relax with a few hours at the day spa.
As the resort is adults only (over 18), it provides a perfect location for that special vacation or honeymoon.
The Little Polynesian is a lovely little resort, with the personal touch, but in a great location.
The Little Polynesian Resort participates in the 'Dine Around the Island' special offer, with 5, 6 and 7 night packages. Please contact us for further information and prices

Currently, there are very limited International flight connections to and from the Cook islands. All international flights operate into Rarotonga and there are domestic connection flights into Aitutaki, Atiu and Mangaia.
The main international carrier is Air New Zealand, with direct air service provided six days a week from and to Auckland (currently there is no flight on a Friday), and once a week to and from Los Angeles, currently departing Rarotonga on a Friday arriving LA on the Saturday. The return flight leaves LA on Saturday and arrives Rarotonga on Sunday morning. They operate on a new B777-200ER aircraft, with 26 Business, 40 Premium Economy and 246 Economy seats. The Premium Economy seats are the first to be offered on this route.
There is also a year round once a week flight with Air New Zealand between Rarotonga and Sydney, departing Rarotonga on Thursday arriving Sydney on Friday and departing Sydney on Friday arriving in Rarotonga on Friday, operating on a B767-300 aircraft, with 24 Business and 206 Economy seats.
Virgin Australia operate 3 days a week from Auckland to Rarotonga, using a 737 aircraft, departing Auckland on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, arriving in Rarotonga the previous day (as you cross the International dateline), and returning flights Tuesday, Thursday and Friday arriving two days later (cross the International dateline again in the other direction adding a day, plus arriving after midnight into the next day) (schedule as of 15/10/15, subject to change without notice).
Also, for the winter months, (June-October 2016), they will be operating a direct flight Christchurch, on New Zealand's South Island, to Rarotonga. Departing on Saturday and arriving in Rarotonga on Friday (cross the date line), and returning the same day, Friday to arrive back in Christchurch on Sunday (date line and midnight time crossing), this will save visitors having to travel up to Auckland to get to the Cook Islands.
Jetstar,
a new airline starting in New Zealand, started a new flight
schedule from Auckland to Rarotonga in March 2016. At
present, they are planning to operate from and to Auckland on
Tuesday, Saturday and Sunday, with the return flight being the same
days, due to arriving and departing after midnight, and will arrive
back in Auckland the following days, due to crossing the
international dateline.
Air Tahiti
operate up to twice weekly flights from Papeete, Tahiti to
Rarotonga, currently on a Saturday and Thursday. However,
on most weeks they only operate the
Thursday flight!
All
domestic flights within the Cook islands are operate by Air Rarotonga. Their main route
is Rarotonga to Aitutaki, on which they operate up to five daily
services, except Sunday, when only one is operated (up till the end
of 2009 no flights were permitted to operate domestically on a
Sunday).
They also provide frequent services to the other main islands in
the Southern group. However, air access to the Northern group
is currently very restricted, to the point where it is almost
impossible for tourists to book flights, due to the limited seats
that are offered. Quite a lot of the time, the
seats are reserved for Government officials and the local residence
of the Northern islands.
Airline Seat Maps
For most airlines, we can pre-reserve seats for you once your flight booking is confirmed, and will do so as a matter of course. If you would like to have a look at a seat plan for your aircraft, you can check the airlines' own website, or one of the best independent websites for this information is SeatGuru.com, which is part of the Tripadvisor group.
