The town of Tekapo, is to be
found on the southern shore of Lake Tekapo, which is
located in the centre of the South Island. It is the
second-largest of three parallel lakes, which run north to
south along the northern edge of the Mackenzie Basin.
The area is a popular holiday
destination of New Zealanders, not only for its scenic beauty and
access to water sports, but also for the bush walks that can be
undertaken in the lake Tekapo Regional Park, which occupies a large
area along the southern shores of the lake.
There are still a number of
churches in the area that were constructed by the early settlers,
which were built during the 1870's, which are well worth a
visit. One in particular is the famous, secluded Church of
the Good Shepherd, located on a tiny spit of land in the middle of
the lake, and is one of the most photographed churches and views in
the area. Very picturesque!
The stunningly blue, glacial lake
and surrounding area has many activites to enjoy,
including horse trekking, walking and hiking, cycling and
mountain biking, helicopter and scenic flight tours, boat cruises,
waterskiing, fishing, golf, stargazing and astronomy tours, and hot
spring pools.
As the area is so popular with
tourists, both domestic and overseas visitors, the range of
accommodation is huge, and there are many different types of
properties to suit every taste and budget.
