Mount Cook, also know by its
Maori name, Mount Aoraki, is located in the centre of the
South Island and is the premier location in New Zealand to
view the Glaciers. Viewing can be by air or both aerial
viewing and landing on the glacier and to have a walk around.
There are many tour companies
offering flightseeing and walking/hiking tours of the glaciers,
downhill and cross country skiing and guided climbing. During
the summer months, guided hiking and treking walks are
available. Mount Cook is also the darkest place in New
Zealand, because of its distance from any town or cities, and is
the perfect place for night sky star gazing.
Because of its location, it can
only be approched by land from the east. The driving
distance from Christchurch is 206 miles (330 kms) and 140
miles (225 kms) from Queenstown.
There is currently only
1 accommodation option actually at Mount Cook, The Hermitage
Hotel in Mount Cook Village, so it may be best to stay in
the surrounding area. The nearest alternative accommodation
will be found in the towns of Twizel which is 24
miles away, Omarama which is 40 miles away and
Tekapo which is about 35 miles away.
