Te Anau, is located in the
south-west of the South Island, halfway between Queenstown and
Invercargill.
There is not a great deal of
historical Maori or European settler activity that makes Te Anau
outstanding. What does make it a must-visit town is its
location on the eastern shore of Lake Te Anau, the largest lake in
the South island, and the eastern edge of Fiordland
National Park, with its fantastic senery, and abundant wild
life.
Te Anau is a small town of
approximately 1850 residents and offers a good selection of
restaurants, cafes and shopping. There is a varied range of
accommodation choices, from camp grounds, motels
and backpackers properties, to small hotels, homestays
and Bed & Breakfast to suit all tastes and budgets.
Its great location makes it an
ideal starting place for walking and guided tours of the area,
including Milford Sound, Doubtful Sound and the many other
major tracks within the Fiordland National Park, as well as
numerous adventure activities and attractions to enjoy in the
area.
