Haast and surrounding areas
Haast is a
small township of around 400 people, located on the central
west coast, in the Westland Region in the West Coast
District of the South Island.
The Haast Region is actually a
large area of over 2.500 sq km of spectacular landscapes, that
includes the main Haast Township, Haast Beach, Haast Pass and
Haast Junction. The area is most noted for its quiet,
deserted coves and beaches, the white water of the Haast River and
Hell's Gate and the stunning scenery everywhere you look.
The area is on the main tourist
scenic route of State Highway 6, that runs almost the whole length
of the West Coast District, starting around the Westport area,
travelling parallel to the coastline through Greymouth, Franz Josef
and Fox Glaciers area, and Haast Junction, before carrying on the
the southern lakes.
As the region is quite rural, and
the area is unspoilt and undeveloped by humans, it offers
uniques scenery, thriving native wildlife and a variety of outdoors
and adventure activities. The area offers everything from sea
and fly fishing, deer stalking and hunting, birdwatching
and nature walks and hikes, to jet boat safaris, helicopter
adventures, glacier flights and boat tours to view seals, penguins
and dolphins.
The town is quite small, and has a
limited number of accommodation properties and services, but does
have a supermarket, gift shops, locally made craft, gift and
jewellery stores, a selection of restaurants, cafes and bars and
a selection of accommodation from hotels, motels, bed
& breakfasts, campgrounds and boutique lodges.
