Greymouth is situated
on the west coast of the South Island, on the Tasman Sea, 158
miles (254 kms) north west of Christchurch, a 184 mile
(296 kms) drive south of Nelson, and 25 miles (41 kms) north
of Hokitika, on State Highway 6. SH6 will also take you
to Wanaka, Queenstown, and the Lake Wakatipu area, which is a
350 mile (560 kms) drive south.
The town is located at the mouth of
the Grey River, hence the origin of the name.
The Maori's inhabited the area long
before the first European visited the area, which is recorded as
1846. The European settlers soon discovered
large deposits of gold and coal in the area which lead to
its development. When these industries declined, they were
replaced by foresty and fishing, which continue today to be a main
contributor to the regions' economy.
The area also has deposits of jade,
which has spawned a carving industry continuing the craft
that originated with the Maori craftsman of old.
Greymouth has a big added plus for
the visitor, as it's linked to Christchurch, not only by road, but
by the TranzAlpine scenic train which offers a truly great, visual
experiance, which can be taken in reliable luxury.
