Arthur's Pass
is a small alpine village situated on State Highway 73,
that runs east to west, between Gladstone/Greymouth, on the
east coast, and Christchurch on the west coast, which, in
total, is a 106 mile (170 kms) drive.
As the name implies, the road cuts
through some stunningly beautiful mountains (or very large hills),
with a number of rivers and lakes that add to the wonderful scenic
experience that you will have when visiting this area.
There are numerous photo opportunities along the way, so keep your
camera handy! If you don't want to drive, you can access
Arthur's Pass by the Tranz-Alpine train from either Christchurch or
Greymouth.
The town is mainly used as a
stopover point for visitors travelling east-west, and there is not
a lot of services available. It is recomended that you stock
up with fuel, groceries and supplies, and pre-book any
accommodation before you arrive. If travelling in winter, it
is highly recommended you travel with snow chains, and at any time
of year, take care when travelling up or down the mountain roads,
as they can be steep in places and are very winding and narrow.
There are a number of hiking tracks
around the mountains surrounding the town, but it is essential to
visit the Information Centre before setting out, to check weather
and track conditions, and make sure you have the correct
equipment for safety. The tracks are mostly challenging and
there are few river bridges and only a few signposts.
