and surrounding areas
Akaroa is small town
of around 700 residents located on the shores of a
large natural inlet harbour, on the Banks Peninsular, just over
1½ hours drive (50m/80km) to the south-west of
Christchurch.
The beautiful harbour is central to
the town and home to a variety of sealife, including Hecters
Dolphins, seals, penguins, as well as an abundance of
different birdlife and wildfowl. There are also a number of
activities on the water, including wildlife cruises, snorkelling,
fishing and swimming, including swimming with the resident
dolphins. On dry land the harbour's edge, and surrounding
countryside offers plenty to do, with scenic walks, lovely
beaches, bays and coves, cycling tours and a variety of shops to
tempt you.
Dining is diverse and there
are many little boutique cafes, bistros and restaurants to sample,
and many have stunning views over the harbour.
