Taupo is located almost in the
middle of the North Island, with Auckland a 174 mile (279 km) drive
to the north, Wellington a 229 mile (368 km) drive to the
south, and the areas other main tourist attraction, Rotorua, a 50
mile(81 kms) drive north.
The town of Taupo is located on the
Northeast shore of Lake Taupo, New Zealand's largest lake, and on
the banks of the Waikato River, which flows east off the lake and
over one of New Zealand's most spectacular waterfalls, the Huka
Falls. They are a short journey north of the town, and a
must see if you are in the area. The falls are also
close to the Huka Lodge, one of New Zealand's premier hotels,
at which Queen Elizabeth II has stayed twice!
The economy of the area is divided
between Agriculture, Forestry and Tourism, the area is home to the
Kaingaroa Forest, which is claimed to be the largest man made
forest in the World.
The surrounding area offers the
visitor a truly wonderful scenic experience. To the northeast
there are hot springs, plus others in the area which are available
for bathing in. To the east is the volcanic Mount Tauhara,
and all around are very heavily forested areas
which offer great walks and a naturalists heaven, with an
abundance of unique flora and fauna. during the winter, the
mountains are great for skiing and snowboarding, and the rest of
year, you can experience guided walks, hunting, golf, mountain
biking, bungy jumping and skydiving, to mention just a few
attractions. Plus there is the lake itself, and the
surrounding rivers, which offer a number of leisure activties,
including jet boating, white water rafting, fishing, boat charters,
kayaking and paragliding, for the visitor to
experience.
Taupo has regular air service to
Auckland and Wellington, as well as Citylink Coach service
to all the main town on both islands

which to explore the North Island then you could do no better than
selecting Taupo.
