Wanaka is located in the south west of the South Island, 43
miles (70 kms) north of Queenstown and a 118 miles (190 kms)
drive south of Franz Josef Glacier area. At
the southern end of Lake Wanaka and close to Lake Hawea,
the town is an ideal base to explore and enjoy many varieties of
watersports and some truly wonderful scenery.
Because of its location close to mountain snow, rivers and the
coast, Wanaka has become a popular tourist destination. Lake
Wanaka, Lake Hawea and the Matukituki River valley are right on the
towns' doorstep and the Southern Alps surround the town to the
north and south. The town centre is on a flat plateau
amidst the hills and peaks, giving scenic vistas in all
directions.
Wanaka has a growing number of good restaurants, bars and cafes,
and a large selection of accommodation choices, from nice hotels
and motels, charming B & B's and homestays, to luxury lodges,
retreats and villas.
If you are an aviation enthusiast, then a vist to Wanaka is a
must, as the town's airport is the home of a large collection on
WW2 aircraft. They host the biennial 'Warbirds over
Wanaka' air display over Easter weekend of even-numbered
years, which is rated as one of the best in the
world. If you are hoping to visit the show, you
will need to book your accommodation early, maybe even 2 years
ahead of time, to guarantee a room, or the other 100,000
people attending will beat you to it!
