The Birds Ferry Lodge is one of the more remote of New Zealand's Luxury Lodges but is easily accessible by car, being only 2KM from State Highway 6, and is also close to Westport, Punakaiki and the famous Pancake Rocks.

 

Birds Ferry Lodge is seamlessly set upon a small hilltop with far-reaching, sea-lined views and acres of wild bush countryside.

 

Birds Ferry Lodge was started in 2003 with the dream to create a healthy, environmentally-friendly, luxury B & B business and to enhance the landscape for wildlife.  They harvest all of their own water for use in the lodge and gardens, of which they have an abundant supply which has not failed yet, and solar water heating was installed in 2009.  Since 2003, many trees and native plants have been planted on the property. Plants were chosen for their food value, habitat for insects and birds, and their landscape value. Part of the property contains rainforest with mature native trees and these trees are home to Bellbirds, Tuis, Wood pigeon and many small native birds.  At various times of year, different native plants flower & the raucous calls of the Tuis and Bellbirds as they battle over the nectar and fruit is a joy.  There are seven large ponds on the property, planted with native grasses and flaxes, and they are alive with insects, frogs and are a welcome resting place to swallows, herons, ducks, plovers and numerous small birds.

There is a huge vegetable garden, organically growing most of the fruit, vegetables and salads used in the kitchen, and they have fresh honey at breakfast from their own beehives.  Most of the other food and supplies are bought very locally, usually only a few miles away!

 

Guest accommodation is luxurious and private, designed with the guests comfort in mind.  There is no TV, no landline and no clock… just a wealth of peace, seclusion and beauty.  There are only 2 guest rooms in the main lodge, and a separate 2-bedroom cottage, which is set away from the main house, guaranteeing peace, quiet and privacy.

 

The 2 rooms in the house,  the Totara Valley room and the Grand View room, both have amazing views, and offer queen beds with luxury linens and electric blankets, ensuite bathroom with bath/shower, heated towel rail, fluffy bathrobes and complimentary handmade toiletries, tea and coffee making facilities, complimentary Wi-Fi internet access, fresh flowers, homemade shortbread and opening large doors to the verandah.

 

The separate timber-built Ferry Man's Cottage is  located in its own 12 acre plot at the end of Birds Ferry Road, on edge of a small lake and with amazing views.  It has 2 bedrooms with a queen four-poster and a split Superking bed, plus a double sofabed in the separate lounge and a fully equipped kitchen.  There is underfloor heating in the bathroom, radiators in the bedrooms and cozy woodburner in the lounge, all to keep you toasty in the winter months.  Outside there are sun decks with garden furniture front and back of the cottage, to catch the sun in any direction, and set into the garden is a large double bathtub, with running hot water, so you can have bubbles with your bubbly whilst watching the sunset.
