The Chateau, Tongariro

Since it was built in 1929, The Chateau, Tongariro has occupied a special place in the hearts and minds of New Zealander's and visitors in the know from across the globe, who have stayed in this famously elegant hotel.  The resort's guests have enjoyed service and ambiance that is simply second-to none, with roaring log fires in the winter, cosy, comfortable lounges, excellent culinary and wine cellar offerings,  and fantastic mountain views seemingly out of every window. 

The Chateau Tongariro Hotel is located within Whakapapa village, right in the centre of Tongariro National Park, nestled in the shadow of three towering active volcanoes, and at the very foot of the majestic and sacred Mount Ruapehu.  The 800 square kilometre Tongariro National Park - a dual listed World Heritage Area - provides a stunning natural playground bursting with diverse landscapes for visitors to the Chateau to discover.

 

The Chateau has 106 luxurious and individual rooms and suites in the main building and 1- and 2-bedroom apartments in a motel-style complex a short walk from the main Chateau.

 

The Ferguson Motel units offer basic accommodation with 1 or 2 separate bedrooms, living/dining room with a small kitchen with fridge, microwave, stove top, sink, toaster and kettle.  Guest in the motel units have full use of all the Chateau's facilities, including the pool, sauna, cinema, golf course and dining facilities.

 

The Standard guest rooms are in the main building, in the historic Ruapehu Wing, and offer 1 King or Queen bed, ensuite bathroom with bath/shower or separate shower, hairdryer and complimentary toiletries, TV with Satelite channels, telephone, Wi-Fi internet access (fee), tea and coffee making facilities and internal views.  Superior Rooms are on the top floor in the newer Tongariro Wing (built 2005) and Family rooms are in the Ruapehu Wing with 1 Queen and 2 Single beds and both offer similar facilties to the Standard rooms.  The spacious Tongariro Rooms feature a Super King bed, underfloor heating and a large ensuite bathroom with separate bath and shower.

 

The Executive Spa Suites are comfortable and spacious and offer a Super King bed, ensuite bathroom with spa bath and  cosy sitting area with gas fireplace.  The 2 signature suites, the McClaren Suite and the Te Heu Hue Suite, are luxurious and spacious with a traditional stately decor, luxurious amenities and stunning mountain views from multiple windows.

 

The elegant Ruahepu Room is the Chateau's signature restaurant with crystal chandeliers, polished tableware and attentive service.  The restaurant serves a daily breakfast buffet, a Sunday lunchtime buffet and daily evening dinner, offering an excellent selection of Western and Pacific-Rim dishes, accompanied by an excellent wine and beverage selection. the adjacent Ruahepu Lounge is a cozy, relaxing spot to enjoy a Chateau High Tea infront of a roaring log fire.  For a more casual eatery, the Pihanga Cafe and T-Bar serves soups, grills and sides with a good variety of hot and cold drinks.

 

Nearby, there are other restaurants and cafes to try, such as the Fergusson Cafe, adjacent to the Motel units, that serves hot and cold drinks and a fresh, healthy menu, or the Tussock Bar & Restaurant, a hot spot for late night dancing and socialising, especially in the ski season, or sampling their gourmet burgers, pizzas and 'hot mountain food'.


In the hotel, there is an indoor heated pool, sauna, fitness room and the Retreat Beauty Therapy salon, In winter and spring, you're literally minutes away from exhilarating ski slopes. Year round, you're on the doorstep of one of nature's finest playgrounds, amongst the world's finest wild trout fishing and at the doorstep of 'New Zealand's best one day walk' - the acclaimed Tongariro Alpine Crossing.
