Whakapapa Village serves one of New Zealand's major ski areas, the Whakapapa ski area, which covers the north western slopes of Mount Ruapehu.  Whakapapa is located on the North Island, half way between Auckland and Wellington, which are both a 4 and a half hour drive away.

Additionally, there are daily flights serving both Auckland and Wellington, as well as train services again to both Auckland and Wellington, and the Intercity Coach service links the area with all major towns on the North Island.

The two skifields on Mount Ruapehu, the Whakapapa on the northern slopes, and the Turoa on the south-western slopes, currently make up New Zealand's largest ski areas, with 65 trails available,  set in 1050 hectares.

During the summer months, the area offers some breathtaking scenic walks and hikes, mountain biking and panoramic chairlift rides to the mountain top, for guided tours around the crater lakes.
