Motu Teta, or Motu Tetaraire to give it its full name, is a secluded private retreat in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, in the atoll of Rangiroa, surrounded by turquoise waters, where it's just you, your significant other, white sand and silence.
But it doesn't just have to be just a romantic couples' retreat; you can invite friends and family to join you on your tiny islet, or motu. It is less Robinson Crusoe, more Ritz Carlton, with a spacious, traditionally-built 3-bedroom villa and a separate 1-bedroom self-contained guest house, close to the main villa. And you aren't totally alone, you do share this idylic island with the friendly staff, that are there to make your stay as exciting or relaxing as you like.
The lovely Celine is your talented cook and housekeeper, and will greet you at the jetty with flowers and a huge smile. Heiarii and Ugo are your 'Man Fridays', that will arrange your excursions, take you out fishing and be your guides and instructors for the many activities you can enjoy on and off the island.
The smaller Guest Villa is separate to the main house, but still close by. The bungalow has a king bed with mosquito net, in a large, airy bedroom with ensuite bathroom, a separate sitting area with a fold out bed, opening double doors to a large private deck with stunning ocean views, and even a deck bar and sitting area, to enjoy a glass of something chilled while you enjoy that view.
The main villa is built in traditional Polynesian style, with high ceilings, large beams, lots of wood-shuttered windows that open wide letting the ocean breezes in, and utilises lots of rich, hardwood and natural materials. The 2 bedrooms, one at each side of the villa, are large and spacious with a Kingsize bed, and the third is a little smaller and has a single bed. There are 2 bathrooms, both ensuite to the master bedrooms, with the third bedroom sharing a bathroom with one of the master suites. The bathrooms offer double vanities, a separate toilet and a walk-in rainfall shower. Each of the bedrooms offer hairdryer, mosquito nets, complimentary bottled water, and opening French doors to the hardwood deck outside. In the centre of the villa, there is an airy and comfortable lounge, with wide opening doors onto the deck, which help make it feel like it's almost part of the beach. There is a flatscreen TV, DVD/Blu-Ray player (with over 200 DVD's/Blu-Rays to choose from!), iPod dock/CD music system (large selection of CD's too), and a small library of books and novels for you to enjoy. The well equipped kitchen is off to one side and is fully stocked with bottled water, soft drink, wine and beer, as well as fresh fruit and snacks if you feel a little peckish between meals. There is no Wi-Fi or Internet access on the island, so this is definitely the place to totally relax and unwind without the stresses of the outside world!
Celine will cook all your meals in the main kitchen, and subject to ingredient availability, she will cook anything you want, at any time you want. Breakfast is normally around 8.00am and will usually consist of French toasts, fresh bread, croissants, crepes, eggs, cooked anyway you like, freshly sliced cold meats and cheeses, fresh fruits, tea and freshly brewed coffee. If you fancy a lie in, though, just tell Celine the night before and she will be ready for breakfast when you are.
Lunch is usually around 1.00pm, and dinner about 8.00pm, but, again, Celine will cook for you whenever you want, everything is flexible and up to you. Lunch could be a picnic on a deserted motu or light fare in the villa, or on the beach. Dinner is a fusion of French cuisine and Polynesian flavours, using local fresh produce, local and imported meats and many locally caught seafoods, some more exotic than others!
As you would expect on a desert island, many of the activities revolve around the water, and most of them are included in the nightly rate. Kayaking, waterskiing, windsurfing, outrigger canoeing, snorkelling, spear fishing, lobstering and rod fishing are all things you can do from the shore, and with the island's motor boat, you can visit nearby villages, take a picnic on a deserted motu, or sail out to the reefs and swim or snorkel with harmless reef sharks, rays and a myriad of colourful fish. Scuba dive (small fee) the great dropoffs and reefs all around Rangiroa, and deep sea sport fishing can also be arranged locally for a small fee. Reef shoes would be very useful to protect your feet here, so make sure you pack them in your bag.
But you don't have to do something every day. If you just want to chill, you have the whole island to do nothing on. Whether you just relax in one of the villas' hammocks or sun loungers, or take a beach mat, find a remote spot on the sand and take it easy until its time to surface for lunch or just a drink or three.
Motu Teta Private Island is the definition of deserted paradise, this would be awesome for a most romantic honeymoon, or couples getaway. It is also excellent for families or groups of friends, an ideal beach/house party venue, where you can do anything you want, on your own timetable. And although the cost looks a little high initially, you have to take into account what is included i.e. daily housekeeper and personal chef, all your food, all drinks, including good quality wines (the islands' owner also owns a Californian vineyard!!) champagne, and beers, all your activities, on shore and in/on water (except scuba diving where there is a charge) with 2 knowledgable guides, use of all the water and sporting equipment, motor boat trips, fishing trips and day excursions, traditional arts and crafts lessons with Celine, and complimentary transfers from Rangiroa Airport to Motu Teta for all guests.
Motu Teta is your own personal deserted paradise island, and could be a dream destination for your special vacation or exceptional honeymoon.

Although there are frequent
international flights into Tahiti, there are limited airports of
embarkation to choose from, with currently only Paris, Los Angeles,
Auckland and Tokyo offering single plane air service to
Tahiti.
The international airline for French Polynesia. is Air Tahiti
Nui, who operate daily flights from Paris and Los
Angeles to Tahiti, and on some days there are additional fights
to/from Los Angeles. In addition, they operate two weekly flights
to/from Auckland and they serve Tokyo twice a week. Their services
to New York and Sydney have been suspended, at this
time.
Air France
currently offer a service from Paris, three times a week via Los
Angeles
Air New Zealand
operates daily flights via LA to Papeete, and 5 days a week from/to
Auckland with it's own aircraft. It also operates a codeshare
arrangements with Air Tahiti Nui providing seats on their fights
from Tahiti to Auckland and Los Angeles.
United Airlines operate 3 times a week from San Francisco to Papeete, on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday, which will connect to their daily flight from Heathrow.
Air Calin
operate a weekly flight between Noumea, in New Caledonia, and
Tahiti.
Hawaiian
Airlines provide a weekly service between Honolulu and
Tahiti, currently operating on a Saturday/Sunday schedule.
LANChile
operate a flight once a week from Santiago to Tahiti via
Easter Island, providing the availability to do a great side trip
from Tahiti to Easter island.
Air Tahiti is
French Polynesia's domestic airline, which operates an extensive
domestic flight network covering all the country's main islands,
with at least a daily service. With the main Society islands
receiving a number of flights a day, since Air Moorea stopped
operations between Tahiti and Moorea, the flight connections now to
Moorea have become limited, most connections between the two are
now done by ferry boat.
The less populated and outer islands have a restricted service, so
sometimes a night stop in Tahiti may be required when connecting to
these islands.
Air Tahiti
provide the only air service between Tahiti and the Cook islands,
which they currently do once a week on a Thursday, an extra high
season flight is operated between June and August
There are a number of aircraft and helicopters available for private charters, but they all tend to be based in Tahiti so arranging charters between the outer islands can be expensive as the aircraft will originate and terminate in Tahiti.
Airline Seat Maps
For most airlines, we can pre-reserve seats for you once your flight booking is confirmed, and will do so as a matter of course. If you would like to have a look at a seat plan for your aircraft, check the airlines' own website, or one of the best independent websites for this information is SeatGuru.com, which is part of the Tripadvisor group.
