The Sofitel Marara Beach Resort is an all bungalow property in Matira Bay, located on the southern end of the main central island, backed by lush vegetation and overlooking Bora Bora's Nunue Lagoon and the Resort's private beach. The hotel was originally built in 1979, by the Italian film director, Dino De Laurentis, to house the actors and crew of the film, Hurricane, and that heritage is carried on with the Hurricane Bar near the pool and the beach. In 2019-2020, the property completed a full refurbishment of all guest rooms, including the building of 18 new overwater bungalows, the restaurants, gardens and public areas, and is now a modern, contemporary property more suited to guests' wants and needs in the 21st centuury.
The Resort has 73 Bungalows built of bamboo wood and palm thatch in the traditional Polynesian style, offering a choice of garden, beachfront or Overwater positions, all comfortably furnished and quite spacious. The accommodation was last renovated in 2019-2020, and now offers modern guest rooms with a Polynesian touch. The Garden View Bungalows provide 1 King bed (split into twins on request), ensuite bathroom with walk-in shower, double vanities, hairdryer and complimentary toiletries, air conditioning, ceiling fans, TV, Wi-fi internet access, tea and coffee making facilities, mini-bar/fridge, single sofa-bed and sliding doors opening to a private furnished deck overlooking the gardens, but just a short stroll to the beach. The Beach Bungalows are the same as the Garden View, but are located just in the tree line facing onto the white sand beach and the lagoon. The Overwater Bungalows are built along the edge of 2 little islets, so that they overhang the water but are attached to the land. They are a similar size and offer the same amenities as the Garden and Beach Bungalows, but have views of the Overwater Bungalows and the lagoon. The larger Luxury Overwater Bungalows are along the decking walkways and have similar amenities to the other bungalows, but additionally have a window seat infront of the large picture window, glass floor panel, private outdoor shower and tiered decks with direct access into the lagoon. Some bungalows face more towards the beach and the restaurant, whilst others face directly out into the lagoon. All guest rooms were fully renovated in 2019/early 2020.
The hotel's restaurant and bar, Latitude 16, is built on stilts above the lagoon and offers Tahitian style entertainment and exotic cocktails, with a French International and Polynesian menu. They have a wide open deck with views of the pool and the lagoon, which is shared with the Hurricane Bar, where you can get poolside snacks and light lunches during the day. Latitude 16 was completely refurbished in 2019, along with the reception and public areas, pool and pool deck and garden landscaping.
Leisure facilities include a waterside infinity pool alongside a private beach, kayaks, bike hire, glass bottom boat trips, catamaran excursions, Island cruises and picnics, waterskiing, fishing, parasailing, volleyball and tennis. And after all your exertions, you can relax and be pampered in the day spa, which offer a range of body and beauty treatments.
The local town of Vaitape is just under 5 miles from the resort, with a small selection of shops, bars and restaurants, including the famous Bloody Mary's.
The Sofitel Marara Beach Resort is in a pleasant location on the central island, giving easy access to the attractions of the island, as well as the beatuful lagoon.

Although there are frequent
international flights into Tahiti, there are limited airports of
embarkation to choose from, with currently only Paris, Los Angeles,
Auckland and Tokyo offering single plane air service to
Tahiti.
The international airline for French Polynesia. is Air Tahiti
Nui, who operate daily flights from Paris and Los
Angeles to Tahiti, and on some days there are additional fights
to/from Los Angeles. In addition, they operate two weekly flights
to/from Auckland and they serve Tokyo twice a week. Their services
to New York and Sydney have been suspended, at this
time.
Air France
currently offer a service from Paris, three times a week via Los
Angeles
Air New Zealand
operates daily flights via LA to Papeete, and 5 days a week from/to
Auckland with it's own aircraft. It also operates a codeshare
arrangements with Air Tahiti Nui providing seats on their fights
from Tahiti to Auckland and Los Angeles.
United Airlines operate 3 times
a week from San Francisco to Papeete, on Tuesday, Thursday and
Sunday, which will connect to their daily flight from
Heathrow.
Air Calin
operate a weekly flight between Noumea, in New Caledonia, and
Tahiti.
Hawaiian
Airlines provide a weekly service between Honolulu and
Tahiti, currently operating on a Saturday/Sunday schedule.
LANChile
operate a flight once a week from Santiago to Tahiti via
Easter Island, providing the availability to do a great side trip
from Tahiti to Easter island.
Air Tahiti is
French Polynesia's domestic airline, which operates an extensive
domestic flight network covering all the country's main islands,
with at least a daily service. With the main Society islands
receiving a number of flights a day, since Air Moorea stopped
operations between Tahiti and Moorea, the flight connections now to
Moorea have become limited, most connections between the two are
now done by ferry boat.
The less populated and outer islands have a restricted service, so
sometimes a night stop in Tahiti may be required when connecting to
these islands.
Air Tahiti
provide the only air service between Tahiti and the Cook islands,
which they currently do once a week on a Thursday, an extra high
season flight is operated between June and August
There are a number of aircraft and helicopters available for private charters, but they all tend to be based in Tahiti so arranging charters between the outer islands can be expensive as the aircraft will originate and terminate in Tahiti. Tahiti Nui Helicopters are one such company that operate resort transfers (where helipad available), inter-island flights and sightseeing trips. Contact us for further info.
Airline Seat Maps
For most airlines, we can pre-reserve seats for you once your flight booking is confirmed, and will do so as a matter of course. If you would like to have a look at a seat plan for your aircraft, check the airlines' own website, or one of the best independent websites for this information is SeatGuru.com, which is part of the Tripadvisor group.
