Mangaia is a short 50 minute flight
east, south east of Rarotonga, the island is over 22 million years
old and has been created out of a number of seabed volcanic
eruptions which have resulted in the original island being push
further up above the sea level. So you may find yourself walking
over a pre-historic coral reef (called Makatea) which is half a
mile inland from the coast! The island is very quiet and the
villager's live the same lifestyle that their ancestors have for
many thousands of years. During your stay, visit the caves
where one of the tribes lived for many years while they were at war
with a neighbouring village tribe, and a walk in the forest to see
the Woodpecker which is unique to Mangaia.
Accommodation on the island is
small and personal, mainly family run bungalows and bed &
breakfast type properties.
