Fatboys Resort is located on Mbabanga Island, just off the southern tip of Gizo Island, in the middle of a horseshoe-shaped coral reef lagoon.
The name 'Fatboys' comes from the Charles Dickens book, 'The Pickwick Papers', and the character, Joe the fatboy, who spends his life eating, drinking, sleeping and making every conceivable effort to avoid doing any work at all!! When you stay at Fatboys, you are positively encouraged to become 'Joe the fatboy' for the duration of your visit!
The Resort is only a 10 minute boat trip across the lagoon from Gizo Town wharf and the journey is very scenic and beautiful, passing other small islands and tiny atolls, with tropical rainforests and white sand beaches.
Accommodation is provided in a variety of bungalows, with 4 Guest Bungalows; 2 Family Bungalows and 2 Honeymoon Bungalows, and 1 self-contained 2-Bedroom Apartment. They all have insect screens, mosquito nets over each bed and have fantastic views of the sea.
The 2 Family Bungalows are semi-detached and have a master bedroom with a Queen bed, a second bedroom with either 1 Queen (on request) or 3 Single beds, a shower room with separate shower, a sitting area, ceiling fans, small kitchenette area with laundry facilities and tea and coffee making facilities, a private verandah with hammock and chairs, plus a large shared verandah (shared with the other Family Bungalow) with table and chairs, and a gated staircase down to the beach
The Honeymoon Bungalows are set in a more secluded area of the beach and offer 1 Queen bed, ensuite bathroom with separate shower, sitting area, ceiling fan, small kitchenette area with laundry faciliites and tea and coffee making facilities and a private furnished deck that reaches out over the sea.
The self-contained 2-Bedroom Apartment is along the beach from the restaurant and jetty, giving a little privacy from other guests. It it a 2/3 storey detached building with the 2nd and 3rd floors being split levels, so not completely separate floors. The master bedroom is on the highest level and has a Queen bed and an ensuite bathroom and a private verandah. The next level has the 2nd bedroom with 1 Queen bed and 1 Single bed, and another private verandah. On the lower level, there is another bathroom, a kitchen with full-sized fridge, toaster, tea and coffee making faciliites and laundry facilities, a living room with ceiling fan and a private beach area complete with stunning views and a barbecue.
The centre of this resort is the overwater restaurant and bar, right at the end of the 100m jetty, which is popular with the locals and visitors alike. The restaurant offers a range of dishes, including rice, salads and fresh fruit, and has a good selection of fresh fish daily, all caught locally just of the reef, including crab and lobsters. The dining area has open windows with amazing views out over the lagoon, and catches the cooling sea breezes.
Although there is not much in resort, the beauty of Fatboys is out in the lagoon. They can arrange spear or rod fishing trips, scuba diving, snorkelling, surfing, local village visits and can shuttle you back to Gizo, to explore the town and the island there. They try to promote economic and social development in the area and always use local people for their excursions and trips.
Fatboys is a nice, good value property for a few days stay, to explore the lagoon, swim, snorkel, take a picinic to a deserted beach, maybe visit Kennedy Island ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kennedy_Island ), or add on to a longer trip staying on other islands in the Solomons.
