Back in the early '90s a couple from Los Angeles Barry and Jennifer Rose found their slice of paradise right on a South Pacific beach, on the south shore of Samoa's main island of Upolu, where they set about developing Coconuts Beach Club with the aim of providing a small, quality resort that would blend in with the Island's natural surroundings, be in harmony with the islands culture, and provide their guests with a very special Polynesian experience. We believe they have achieved just that, as the resort has been created out of Jennifer and Barry's passion for realising their dream. Over time they have created a truly unique property, using local materials, lots of local woods and timber poles, and local Samoan craftsmen, one that cannot be replicated in a big resort that has been designed by a 'professional hotel designer' for a purely financial end. This property comes straight from the heart.
The resort has only 26 accommodation units comprising of Coco Suites and Treehouse suites, which are positioned a little back from the beach, their Beach and Ocean located units, comprising of Royal Beach Villas and Beach Fales, and six new Overwater Fales, currently the only ones available in Samoa. The Overwater Fales are brand new and were only completed late 2013, and all the other rooms have been refurbished in 2011-2013
The 8 Treehouse Suites are located in a traditional-style wooden 2-storey building, set in the tropical gardens overlooking the ornamental ponds a short stroll from the beach. They offer roomy accommodation, with a bamboo 4-poster king bed, or 1 double and 1 twin bed, a rustic ensuite bathroom with natural stone walls and floors, a sunken bath, separate waterfall shower and a hairdryer, a small sitting area and a private furnished balcony or terrace. They provide air conditioning, ceiling fans, mini-fridge with a complimentary mini bar (including beer, wine, water & soft drinks, restocked daily), in-room safe and tea and coffee making facilities.
The 3 spacious Coco Suites are set around a lush green courtyard garden and offer similar facilities to the Treehouse Suites, but have a separate sitting room with sofa bed and separate bedroom, and 2nd ensuite bathroom. The sitting room can be closed off to make a 2nd bedroom if required.
The 6 detached Beach Fales (bungalows) are set right on the sandy beach overlooking the water, offering a split level bedroom with king-size bamboo bed, natural lava stone ensuite bathroom with opaque ceiling giving lots of soft light, sunken bath and rainfall shower, a spacious sitting area with sofa bed, a private shaded sun terrace, with loungers and table and chairs and the same amenities as the Treehouse Suites. Two of the Beach Fales have 2 bedrooms, with 2 separate bedrooms, one with a king bed and the other with 2 twin beds, 2 ensuite bathrooms, a larger sitting area and larger terrace. An extra bed can also be put in the sitting room if required.
The Royal Beach Villas are a complex of 3 separate villas that could be booked individually, or as a complete 3-bedroom villa. The central Villa Matai is a huge 2-storey villa, with a raised bed area with a king-size bamboo four-poster bed, an oversized ensuite bathroom with lava rock walls, quartzite tiled floor, double vanities, sunken bath and rainfall shower, a large sitting room with spiral staircase to the second floor relaxing space, (which could be another bedroom if required) and private furnished balcony, and doors opening to a private shaded deck and your own private entrance bridge over the ornamental ponds. The two 1-bed side villas, the Villa Pule and Villa Ali'i, are connected by a short covered walkway to the central villa and are similar in design to the Beach Fales, with a split level bed and sitting area, ensuite bathroom, and doors opening to a private deck.
The 6 brand new Overwater Fales have a unique design, utilising lots of local wood, traditional thatched roofs and large part-shaded decks with sun loungers overlooking the water. They have a king-size bed, comfy sitting area, double aspect windows and 2 sets of patio doors opening to the private deck. The ensuite bathroom also opens to the deck, and has double vanities carved from lava rock, sunken bath with rainfall shower, and an opaque ceiling, bathing everything in soft, diffused light. The wraparound deck has a shaded area with table and chairs and a bright, sunlit area with sun loungers. There are amazing sea views from every part of these unique bungalows.
Another major plus for staying at Coconuts is the dining. The restaurant and bar is under the control of Head Chef, Mika Pirics. Mika owned two restaurants in Honolulu until he too, decided to leave the fast life behind and joined up with Jennifer and Barry. Mika has created a wonderful atmosphere in the restaurant and on the open-air Pakm Terrace, which matched by the superb menu and wine list, making the dining experience at the Coconuts one to savour and remember.
The Resort also offer a variety of amenities for guests to enjoy. There is a unique gecko-shaped pool, overlooking the sea and surrounded by an expansive sun terrace with sunloungers under their own thatched sunshades, and tropical thatched pool bar. The white sand beach has plenty of places to access the warm water, where you can swim, snorkel (complimentary snorkelling equipment), kayak into the lagoon or the nearby mangrove estuary, or pick up free bus tickets into Apia town, for shopping and exploring. Coconuts offers a range of tours and excursions offering guided tours, more adventurous escapades or cultural experiences. And the staff also demonstrate traditional crafting skills and have many local stories to tell.
When you want to totally relax, the peaceful and private Coco Beach Spa can offer a range of massage, health and beauty treatments to pamper yourself with.
If you are celebrating a special occasion, or are honeymooning at Coconuts, the Resort team are more than happy to add some special touches to make your stay more memorable. For example, Honeymooners can celebrate with fresh flowers, fresh fruit plate and a complimentary bottle of wine in your room, 2 complimentary cocktails and 2 Coconuts personalised t-shirts, and hand-woven Pale (flower head tiare) to wear at Coconuts weekly traditional party night!
Coconuts is also a great place to actually get married, and they can arrange everything for you, including cake, flowers and beautiful floral-decorated arch for your beachfront ceremony.
So, if you are looking for a truly unique experience in a Samoan paradise, with a that sand-between-your-toes feeling, complemented with a touch of traditional Samoan style, then look no further, as Coconuts is the place for you.
