surrounding areas
Picton,
Waikawa and the Queen Charlotte Sound
area are situated on the north-east corner of the South
Island, close to the wine growing areas of Marlborough and
Blenheim.
The pretty seaside town of Picton
is at the head of the large Queen Charlotte Sound, and is the
location for the port and terminal of the inter-island
ferry service which operates across the Cook Strait, to and
from Wellington in the North Island. The waterfront has
beautiful views, and there are many little cafes and restaurants,
servings fresh Marlborough Sound seafood, from which to enjoy the
view.
There is not much to do in Picton
itself but would be a place to stay if you arrive on a late ferry
service, or are departing the next day on an early sailing, or
wanted a couple of quiet days taking in the sights of Queen
Charlotte Sound. There are several small cruise boats to take
visitors out into the beautiful Sounds, spotting for dolphins,
Orcas, humpback whales, seals and birds. Along the beautiful
coastline, there are many small bays, coves and beaches, great to
spend a few hours on with a picnic.
If you did want to stay in the area
for a few days, there are many things to see and do within a
short distance of the town itself. Very similar in scenery
and enviroment to the Fiordlands, in south-west South Island, but
on a much smaller scale, the area has many options for outdoor
activities, such as walking, fishing, diving, sailing,
whale and dolphin watching, kayaking and cycling. Photo
opportunities abound everywhere you look around the coastline,
so keep your camera handy.
