Oamaru, is located on the central-southeast coast, on State
Highway 1 between Christchurch, which is 153 miles (247km)
north, and Dunedin, 75 miles (120 kms)
south. The main south train line connects the town to
both these cities, as well as there being regular airservice from
and to Christchurch. Oamaru is the largest town in the North
Otago region of the South Island.
In February 1770 Capt Cook sailed the Endeavour off the mouth of
the Waitaki river, which Oamaru is built close to, but he did not
make land. The area is the location of great Maori
archaeological interest, with a number of excavations that have
been undertaken since 1847.
The town was founded in the early 1850's and has developed off
the agricultural and pastoral farming industry, and the
associated frozen meat industry. It is home to some very
interesting architectural buildings, mainly built with the
abundant local limestone, with some amazing stone carvings.
The town has a vigorous restoration project, to revitalise and
protect the beautiful buildings that the town still has.
Today, close to 13,000 people live in Oamaru, and tourism brings
a large number of visitors and revenue to the area.
Activities to enjoy include nature walks, stunning, wide beaches,
visit Blue and Yellow-eyed penguin colonies, winery tours, visit
museums and galleries and take in the views walking around the
picturesque harbour and surrounding countryside. Bars, cafes
and restaurants offer many choices for sustanance, and local
wineries produce some very pleasant wines to enjoy.
As with most of New Zealand's towns, the choice and cost of
accommodation in Oamaru is varied and vast, to suit every
taste and budget.
