surrounding areas
Lake Moeraki is a scenic area on the west coast of the South
Island, with a picturesque lake, dense forest and a beautiful
coastline.
Located a short drive north of Haast, on the tourist Glacier
Highway, State Highway 6, there isn't a main town to speak of, but
there are shops, restaurants and accommodation along SH6 offering
services to guest staying in the area.
The main draw to this area is the flora and fauna, with vast
tracts of rainforest, quiet rivers and lakes, green pastureland and
wide sandy beaches. The rainforests are home to a huge
variety of birdlife, and around the lakes, rivers and coastline it
is easy to spot a vast number of waterfowl, adult and
baby fur seal, penguins, and if you're lucky, giant elephant
seals!
You can enjoy guided walks and hikes through the rainforest,
round the lakes and the coastline, where your guides will point out
the rare birds and wildlife just a few feet away from you.
Kayaking and canoeing are popular on the lakes, and the rivers
that flow into it, and the seashore has many secluded bays and
rocky coves where you can collect shells, picnic on the
sands and enjoy the quiet views.
