Harihari and surrounding areas
Hari Hari (or
Harihari) is a small, rural township on the South Island's
west coast and the Tasman Sea, halfway
between Hokitika and Franz Josef Glacier. The town is a
few miles inland on State Highway 6, making travelling to or
through the town popular with visitors exploring north/south on the
South Island's west coast.
The township was developed to
support the local logging industry in the late 1800's and early
1900's, and today the forest in the area is now protected
and is good for bush walking, bird watching and sport
fishing. Modern day Hari Hari has a population of
around 500, and its main industry now is conservation and dairy
farming. Along the main road, you will find charming tearooms
and cafes, some with their own small dairies, and small,
friendly craft shops
The town has a place in New
Zealand's aviation history, as it was there in 1931 that the
Australian flying adventurer, Guy Menzies landed to complete
the first solo flight across of the Tasman Sea from Australia,
which took 11 hours and 45 minutes.
As Hari Hari is fairly small, there
are only a few services and accommodations available to visitors,
but it is enough if you are just staying 1 or 2 nights.
