Springs and surrounding areas
Hanmer Springs is a
small town located in the Caterbury region on the South
Island. It's an 84 mile (135 kms) south west drive from
Kaikoura, and is 56 miles (90 kms) north of Christchurch.
There is also a daily shuttle bus that operates between
Hanmer and Christchurch.
Set in the Hanmer Forest Park, the
town was built around a natural hot spring that was discovered
in the late 19th century, and today Hanmer Springs offers a
very relaxing Hot Springs experience in several pools around the
town. The area is very popular as a domestic holiday
destination for New Zealanders, not just for the springs, but also
for skiing, as there are 2 good ski fields in the area. For
the adventurous, there are an number of activities to keep you
busy, such as mountain biking, bungy jumping, and walking
and hiking trails, to name but three.
During the summer months, Hanmer
Springs is the eastern gateway to a number of the South
Island's scenic wounders, such as Lake Tennyson, Rainbow Valley and
the Nelson Lakes National Park. You would need a 4 x4
vehicle, but that all adds to the adventure!
