surrounding areas
The 7.5 mile (12km) Franz
Josef Glacier is situated on the South Islands' west
coast, on the western side of the Southern Alps mountain
range. Just 12 miles (20km) to the south is the
location of the 8 mile (13km)
Fox Glacier, which is fed by 4 blue-toned,
alpine glaciers combining into one. This makes the
area ideal for your New Zealand glacier experience. This
whole region is part of the Te Wahipounamu Park, which is
a World Heritage Site.
The glacier
area is located on the west coast, half way between
Greymouth and Queenstown, and is one of the West Coast's main
tourist attractions, supporting nearly 250,000 visitors each
year. It offers an easier option for your glacier
experience than a visit to Mount Cook, which is not as easily
accessible on a flydrive itinerary, as you are required to make a
detour to reach it.
Due its popularity, there are
numerous options of accommodation and services for tourists, to
suit all tastes and budgets, and it is recommended to book your
property choice in advance to guarantee availability.
Glacier flights can be taken either
by a flight sightseeing trip which overflys the glacier, or
you can take a ski-equiped aircraft or helicopter which will
land on the glacier, allowing you to disembark and walk on the
glacier surface. We highly recommend that you take organised,
guided tours, to get the best experience from your time in the
area, and for safety.
Other than the Glaciers, there is
some stunning scenery at lower levels, with walking paths and
hiking trails, historic gold mining towns, and several lakes,
especially the mirror-like Lake Matheson, which reflects the nearby
mountains in its millpond surface, offering amazing photo
opportunities.
