Darfield is a small,
rural town in the central north-east of the South Island and
is about 20 miles (35km) west of the coast and Christchurch,
on State Highway 73 SH73).
Known as The Great Alpine Highway,
SH73 starts in Christchurch on the east coast, travels through
the Southern Alps region through Arthurs Pass and ends in
Greymouth/Hokitika on the west coast. This makes Darfield an
ideal stopping place for tourists driving the SH73. The town
is also a stop on the famous TranzAlpine scenic train service,
that follows a similar route to SH73.
Darfield is close to the Canterbury
ski areas, the Rakaia and Waimakariri Rivers, several
excellent wineries that offer tours and tastings, and many
parks, gardens and forests, which are ideal for the many walking
and hiking tracks and trails, to really appreciate the
stunning countryside.
Although it a fairly small town,
there are still a good selection of shopping and dining, and
accommodation is plentiful and diverse.
