Blenheim and surrounding areas
Blenheim is located in
the heart of the Marlborough region, in the north-east corner of
the South island, and just a short ride south from Picton, where
the inter-island ferry terminal is located. The town
has a resident population of just over 30,000 but many thousands of
tourists and visitors stay or pass through the town every year.
Farming, both pastoral and
agricultural, and award-winning vineyards are the regions main
economical income, and the area is home to some of New
Zealands' most World renown wineries, including Cloudy Bay and
Montana to name but two! Tourism is also important to the
area, and the hot and sunny summers and cool, crisp winters, make
it popular with visitors, as well as ideal for grape growing.
There are many walks and hikes
around the area, and the town has gardens and parks to stroll
around. The Marlborough Sounds have beautiful coastal
scenery, and you can swim with dolphins, go whale watching, take
scenic boat cruises, go kayaking, fishing or water-skiing.
The rugged coastline provides stunning scenery for bush walks and
hikes.
State highway 1 runs through
Blenheim and SH 6 ends where it meets SH1. Blenheim is unique
for a large town, in that there are no traffic lights in the road
layout, only roundabouts at each junction. If you
are not travelling by road, there are regular flights connecting
Blenheim with Wellington, Christchurch and Auckland, so this area
is easily included in a "flytour" of New Zealand.
