Ashburton is a small town located a few miles inland, in the middle of the east coast, on the State Highway 1, 53m (86km) south-west of Christchurch.

The town is a service town for the surrounding area, which is rich in pastoral and agricultural farming, being in the middle of the fertile Canterbury Plains.

The area offers a wide variety of activities such as skiing, white water rafting, jet boating, golf, visiting gardens and parks, hiking and walking nature trails, great fishing and highflying sightseeing in helicopters or hot air balloons.  A few miles drive to the coast north and south of the town, you can find rocky coves and shingle beaches, but not all beaches are safe for swimming, due to strong currents, so check before diving in!

Accommodation is similarly varied with everything from hostels and motels, holiday homes and holiday parks to boutique bed & breakfasts and lodges.
