Arrowtown is an historic, gold
mining town on the banks of the River Arrow, that preserves its
historic flavour in its old and new buildings.
At its peak, in the height of the
mining era, Arrowtown had over 7,000 residents. It had a
population low in the 1960's of less than 200, but the
present day figure is around the 2,500 residents. As
residents and New Zealand holidaymakers began moving back to
Arrowtown, they started to buy up the old houses and
cottages and restoring them, so further preserving the towns
history.
Being very close to Queenstown,
only 10 miles away, tourists staying in the city, are
often visitors to, or pass through Arrowtown. But
the town has a number of attractions to fill your time for
a day or two. There are scenic walks and hikes,
skiing in winter, cycling tours, historic tours and gold-panning
experiences, some of the region's best wineries, art galleries
and museums, as well as lots of shops, cafes and restaurants
to try out.
Because Arrowtown is so close
to Queenstown, it is an option as your main base to stay if you
want to be close to the big town, but not actually in it!
There are a number of hotels, lodges and welcoming bed &
breakfast properties to choose from, to suit any preference or
budget.
