Whakatane is located at the
eastern end of the Bay of Plenty on the North Island, and at
the mouth of the Whakatane River. It's a town of over 20,000
inhabitants with another 16,000 plus living in the surrounding
Greater Whakatane District.
Whakatana is a 197 mile (316
kms) drive south of Auckland and 56 miles (89 kms) north
of Rotorua. There are daily flight connections with
Auckland and Wellington, and the Citylink coach services connect
Whakatana with all the countries major towns.
The area was first settled
by Maori explorers in the 13th century, and the first European
in the early 1830's. Their arrival lead to
confrontation between the two cultures, which culmulated in
the New Zealand Wars of the mid 19th century. Peace
finally came to the area in the early
1900's. Today, the areas' main revenue industries
are forestry, dairy farming, horticulture, fishing and tourism.
Whakatane has developed into a
main centre for visitors wishing to visit the Bay of Plenty area
and to experience all that the town and the scenic region has to
offer including, whale watching, swimming with dolphins, charter
boat fishing, cruises, mountain biking, fishing and
hunting, bushwalking, and beautiful wide
sandy beaches to play on and explore. White Island, or
Whaakari, just of the coast, is an amazing day trip around one of
the worlds, few accessible active volcanoes, and you take a guided
tour on the island, or flight-seeing trips over the crater.
Acommodation and services in the
town and the area are varied and plentiful, and offer choices to
suit avery taste and budget.
