Waitomo is a small village in the central west of the North
Island, around 35miles (57kms) south of Hamilton, 65miles
(105kms) west of Rotorua, 25 miles (40kms) east of the Tasman
Sea coast and just off State Highway 3.
It is most famous for the amazing caverns and underground cave
systems found here.
The stunning caves are thought to be over 2 million years old,
and have amazing multi-coloured limestone formations,
huge stalagmite and stalagtite formations, and even
an impressive cave system, travelled through by boat, whose
ceiling is covered with hundreds of luminescent glowworms!
Other unique attraction is tubing/caving through a winding cave
system, aptly named Black Abyss and Black Labyrinth, following the
course of a natural underground river, which is not recommended if
you are claustraphobic, or scared of the dark!!
The surrounding countryside is also very pretty, with
miles of rolling green fields and valleys, breath-taking
waterfalls and wooded walks to explore.
The village itself is small with only a few facilities for
tourists, and it would probably be best to consider Waitomo as a
day trip from your base elsewhere, possibly Hamilton or on the
coast. But if you want to stay in the area, there are a
few choices including chalets, B & B's, holiday
parks, a hotel and guest lodges. The nearby town of Te Kuiti
offers more choice for shops, bars and restaurants, and is only a
few mile down the road.
