areas
Waihi is located on New
Zealand's North island, at the base of the Coromandel
Peninsula, at the western end of the Bay of Plenty.
The nearby coastal resort town of Waihi Beach is just a 6
mile drive away and to the west of the town are the hills of the
Kaimai Ranges. Due to it's location, it is an ideal stop
between Auckland and Tauranga, Rotorua or if visiting further up
into the Coromandel Peninsula.
The township
of Waihi grew up around the gold and
silver mining operations, which were started in the area
during the late 1870's. By 1908, it was the fastest
growing town on the North Island, and at that time it was three
times larger than Hamilton. Precious metal mining still
continues to this day, all be it in a much reduced way.
Now Waihi is a pleasant
little town offering numerous choices of accommodation, to
suit all tastes and budget, and plenty of varied restaurants,
charming cafes and many shops to investigate.
Activities in the area concentrate
on outdoor pursuits, such as walking and hiking, fishing, several
railway and mining museums, gardens and parks to
visit, mountain biking and golf.
