Tauranga is at the northern end of the Bay of Plenty, on the north-east coast of the North Island.  The main centre for the region, it is the most populated city in this area with over 120,000 permanent residents, as well as the 6th largest urban area in New Zealand, and it's still growing!

Located at the entrance to the large, natural harbour, the area was first occupied in the 12th century, but it was during the early 1800's that the area really became settled, and permanent small towns and villages start to expand and flourish.  The harbour has been central to the growth and prosperity of the early township, and even today, it is New Zealand's biggest exporting port, holds 2 large marinas with berths for over 1000 yachts and boats and is the area's primary cruise ship port of call.

Tauranga is a popular town for New Zealanders to retire to, and surf & sun seekers, who want close proximity to the water and all its activies, but want to live in cosmopolitan city with more to offer.

Scores of New Zealanders vacation in the area during the summer months, and many have holiday homes in the town.  Because it is such a popular seaside resort, there is a huge selection of accommodation available, from backpackers hostels, camping and holidays parks, motels, and self-contained apartments, to hotels, holiday homes, bed & breakfast properties, lodges and luxury lodges.  There are also numerous shops, bars and restaurants that cater to local residents as well as visiting tourists.

The main attractions in and around the town focus mainly on the fabulous beaches, which are long and sandy and offer great surfing, safe swimming, kayaking and there are many small islands, wrecks and reefs that make for stunning diving areas.  Other than the watersports, the area has many parks and gardens to explore, walking, hiking and mountain biking trails and numerous tours and attractions to experience.
