Okahune is a small
town located in the central south-west of the North Island, at the
southern border of the Tongariro National Park, and 14 miles
(23km) from the south-western slopes of Mount Ruapehu, one of
the world's most active volcanos.
With a population of less than
1500, the towns' population grows vastly during the ski season, and
the town is know as the 'apres ski capital of the North
Island'. The town holds a Mountain Mardi Gras each year,
which celebrates winter and the start of the ski season with a
street party with musicians, stalls and rides, and is reputed
to be one of the premier ski parties to attend each
year. They also hold an annual Carrot Carnival, to celebrate
the fact that Ohakune and the surrounding agricultural land
supplies most of New Zealand's carrots!
The mountains are the base for most
of the activites in and around Ohakune, both in winter for skiing,
snowboarding and snowsports, and in summer for walking and hiking,
mountain biking and numerous outdoor activities.
Accommodation is varied and
abundant, due to the town's year-round appeal and constant
flow of tourists into the area, and offers a choice of
accommodation from bed and breakfast, backpackers,
lodges and motels to luxury accommodation if you want to spalsh
out.
