New Plymouth is on the west coast
of the North Island, approximately halfway between Auckland and
Wellington, with Auckland being a 226 mile drive north
and Wellington a 218 mile drive South. New Plymouth is the
principal town of the Taranaki region of the North
Island, and has a population of over 53,000 residents
The first European settlers arrived
in 1828, when the land was purchased by the New Zealand Company
from the local Maori tribe. It then set up a
subsidiary company, the Plymouth Company, to attract emigrants from
England's West Country to move there and develop the region, hence
the origin of the town name.
The first boat load of emigrants
arrived aboard the sailing ship, the William Bryan, in
March, 1841. Sadly, a dispute developed between the
settlers and the Maori tribe who sold the land, as to how much land
the settlers were entitled too, which, during the
period 1859-61, led to the town being turned into a fortified
garrison, with over 3,500 soliders being based there.
The dispute turned into a full blown conflict, with the First
Taranaki (Maori) War being fought.
Due to its lush volcanic soil,
the area has many lovely public gardens, the main one being the
128acre Pukekura Park. The lovely beaches around the area are
know for their great surfing which attracts surfers from all over
the World. There is also the award-winning Coastal Walkway,
which is a 10k paved promenade along the coastline.
There are regular daily flights to
Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch, as well as daily Intercity
Coach services to all the nations main cities.
