Mount Maunganui is a
coastal resort town on the north-east coast of the North Island, in
the Bay of Plenty area and across the bay from the town of
Tauranga. It is renown for its numerous, safe
beaches and its laid-back coastal lifestyle.
Named after the extinct volcano
which rises 232 metres from the sea, the town itself is
built on the narrow sandbar that connects the
mountainous cone to the mainland, which gives the town
the favourable position of having an ocean coastline, with the
Pacific Ocean in the north-east, and a harbour shoreline, on Pilot
Bay in the south-west.
Locally know as 'The Mount', the
town had a turbulent Maori history for many years as several
tribes passed through and tried to settle here, but peace was
brokered in the early 1820's, and the town has grown gradually
since. It now has a permanent population of around
4,000, and lots of New Zealanders vacation in the
area, many owning holiday homes in the town, which
increases the population greatly in the holiday seasons.
The attractions in and around
the town center mainly on the fabulous beaches, which are long and
sandy, and offer great surfing waves. There are also
many shops, bars and restaurants that cater to local residents as
well as visiting tourists, and the Mount Mainstreet Shopping Centre
is one of the largest in New Zealand outside of Auckland.
Because it's such a popular seaside
resort, there is a huge selection of accommodation available, from
backpackers hostels, camping and holidays parks, motels, and
self-contained apartments, to hotels, holiday homes, bed &
breakfast properties, lodges and luxury lodges.
