Matakana is small town
a little way inland from the coast, at the northern end of the
Hauraki Gulf, on the jagged coastline of bays, rivers and
fjord-style inlets.
Matakana Village is in the centre
of the Matakana Coast Wine Country, which stretches along
meandering rivers and bordered by the beautiful Pacific
coastline and beaches from Puhoi in the south, to Pakiri in
the north. The area is just a short 35 mile drive north of
Auckland up State Highway 1 and makes it a popular destination for
Aucklanders into their food and wine, for short
getaways. The boutique food shops, trendy cafes and
restaurants and excellent weekly farmers market just adds to the
towns' gastronomic appeal.
If you are looking to
experience the very best of New Zealands wine country and you want
to enjoy a gastronomic treat then a stay in this area is must,
where your choice of dinning is endless, once dubbed the Fruitbowl
of Auckland, the mass growing of exotic tropical
fruits has given way to the proliferation of small
boutique wineries many of them family run, where wine production is
a passion not a business!
The nearby coastline with its
beaches and coves, offer miles of white sand, with great swimming
and snorkelling, soft dunes, and fascinating rock pools to
explore.
You can visit the area just for the
day, or you can elect to spend a few nights there and explore the
area at your leisure
