Marton and surrounding areas
Marton is a small,
rural town in the Rangitikei District, in the Manawatu-Wanganui
region of the North Island. Located in the south-west corner
of the North Island, Marton is a few miles inland from the
coast and State Highway 3, and is 22 miles (35km) south-east
of Wanganui and 25 miles (40km) north-west of Palmerston North.
Named after Captain James Cook's
home village in Yorkshire, Marton is important to the surrounding
agricultural and farming area as the local service town, providing
supplies, provisions and services to the residents, as well as the
sightseeing tourists who pass through, or stay for a few days
visit.
Industry in the area has ranged
from flour mills, saw mills, brickmaking, wool and textile
manufacture and processing, to farm machinery manufacture, food and
drink processing and various services in the horse industry, such
as saddlery, livery and breeding.
New hospitals, railways, and Post
Office establishments brought an increase in population, that lead
to an expansion in the central shopping centre in the town, as well
as huge growth in the construction industry building new
homes. Although growth slowed down in the later part of the
20th century, many city dwellers are now being drawn to Marton, for
its quiet pace of life but with all the amenities you need to live
comfortably, and still being close to large towns for additional
services if required. the resident population is now a little
under 5,000, but increases largely in the holiday seasons.
Similarly, for tourists, the town
offers shops, restaurants and bars, as well as a good selection of
accommodation, in the town and the surrounding rural area.
