Martinborough is in the far south
of the North Island, and is 40 miles (65km) east of Wellington and
22 miles (35km) south west of Masterton. It is located in a
small valley, with small hilly ranges to the west and east of the
town.
Founded in the late 1800's by
settler John Martin, the town's street are laid out to resemble the
Union Flag. Martinborough is now a small, rural town, with
around 1,500 permanent residents, that provides services to the
surrounding farming and agriculture communities. This includes a
large number of renowned vineyards, producing some good wines,
especially Pinot Noir varieties. There are around 30
vineyards all within a few minutes of the town, and some are within
walking distance.
As Martinborough is in the South
Wairarapa district, it is a popular area for visiting tourists, and
there is a good range of infrastructure to cater to visitors needs,
such as shops, restaurants, cafes and a varied selection of
accommodation to suit most tastes and budgets.
The surrounding countryside offers
stunning scenic views and there are walks, winery tours, some with
fine dining as an optional extra, golf, horse treks, bush and
chasm hikes and guided tours.
