Hamilton and the Waikato River
region is on the west coast, south of Auckland. Hamilton is
the fourth largest urban area in New Zealand and the largest inland
city, so there is plenty to see and do in the city, as well as in
the surrounding area.
Hamilton has everything to offer
the short stopover tourist or a long vacation guest, from huge
areas of parks and gardens, museums, Hamilton Zoo, river cruises,
great restaurants, bars and cafes, vibrant nightlife and
world-class shopping at several retail shopping centres.
Outside the main city, the scenery
is stunning, lush and green, and seems endless! Charming
towns and villages are dotted throughout the area, and there are
many things to do and see. From Nguaruawahia, home of the
reigning Maori King, Maungatautari Ecological Island reserve, with
thousands of native flora and fauna, many heritage and cultural
attractions, and the original Hobbiton Village set, from The
Lord of the Rings films, to world renowned surfing in Raglan, hot
air ballooning, walks, hikes, horse and 4WD treks, many geothermal
active areas, where you can soak in the hot springs and pools,
and see an amazing lost world of underground caves, grottos
and sink holes, where you can abseil, raft through a cave system,
take guided boat rides through grottos, and visit stunning
underground waterfalls.
The Waikato River is the longest
river in New Zealand, flowing for 425km from the centre of North
Island, all the way to Hamilton and the coast. As well as
providing numerous recreational activites, it also powers several
hydro-electric dams along its route.
Travelling around the area is easy,
with an expansive, well-maintained and uncongested road and
highway system, making self-driving a pleasurable experience.
If you don't want to drive yourself, there several coach and
rail operators offering numerous itineraries to various
destinations, and within the city and in some local towns, taxis
are available.
Accommodation in the area is huge
and varied, from boutique hotels and lodges, motels, and serviced
apartments, to holiday homes, farmstays, caravan, camper and
camping sites and small and personal homestays and bed &
breakfast properties.
