Greytown is located on
the southern end of the North Island, 15 miles (25km) south
of Masterton and 11 miles (16 kms) east of
Martinborough and 50 miles (80km) north-west of Wellington,
where the inter-island ferry port is located.
The area is refered to as the
Wairarapa district, on the south-east corner on the North Island
and is right in the heart of the wine producing region.
The area is beautiful, rural farming country, with verdant hills
and valleys, right up into the Rimutaka Mountain Range.
The town is proud of its
history, and actively protects and restores the many Victorian
and colonial buildings in the town, and keeps a register of the
many beautiful trees in and around the town. The Cobblestones
Museum, on Main Street, contains several complete historic
buildings, as well as numerous vehicles and artifacts from the
towns' history. Also, on Main Street, you will find many
antique stores and charming cafes and shops to explore.
Other activities in the area
include historic walks, vineyard and farm visits, golf, horse
treks, bush and chasm hikes, and numerous shops and restaurants to
experience.
