Featherston is a small town in
the South Wairarapa District, which lies on the southern-most
tip of the North Island. The town is just north of the
Rimutaka Tunnel in the Rimutaka Mountain Range, and has a
population of around 3,000 people.
The town is on the eastern side of
the Rimutaka Mountain Range, close to the northern shore of Lake
Wairarapa. It is 23 miles (37 km) south-west of
Masterton and 39 miles (63 km) north-east of Wellington, and
the ferry port for the South Island ferries.
The town is renown for the Fell
Engine Museum, which contains the world's ony surving Fell
locomotive engine, that used to run on the Fell mountain railway up
into the nearby mountain. The system is unique in that
it has a third raised center rail, that provided extra traction or
braking up or down very steep gradients.
Other activities in the town and
surrounding area include many walking and hiking trails, winery,
farm and garden tours, 4WD safaris, golf, horse treks, hunting,
mountain biking, rafting and canoeing on the nearby Ruamahunga
River, surfing, and many museums, antique shops and art
galleries to visit.
Accommodation in the area is
diverse and abundant, with many small hotels and motels, individual
lodges and charming bed & breakfast properties.
