Dargaville is a small,
friendly town located in the central north-west of the North
Island, on the Northland Region peninsula, 2 1/2 hours drive north
of Auckland. It is ideally located
to visit south-west Northland, and maybe a good base for
a few days exploring.
The town was founded in the
mid-1800's, and was known for a thriving industry in kauri tree
logging and gum (amber) digging. Now it has a
population of around 5000 and in the last 20 years has grown in
popularity as tourist destination.
Being located on a large natural
harbour on the Kauri Coast, there are a number of water sports,
fishing excursions and boat cruises to experience, as well as
dry land activities such as mountain biking, walking/hiking and
beach quad bike hire. The beaches are stunning, too.
The town offers a varied selection
of shops, art galleries museums to wander around, and when you feel
a bit peckish, there are a wide variety of dining options to choose
from.
Accommodation in and around the
town are as diverse as the rest of the country, and choosing where
to stay could be your dilemma.
