By Western European standards there are not quality hotels in either Tuvalu or Kiribati.  Both have one hotel which is viewed as 'the Hotel', that were built with grants from the Chinese, they are owned and operated by the respective governments.

 

The Otintaai is a very basic design and construction with painted breezeblock walls and only very basic furniture, but they are air-conditioned and have private bathrooms with showers. There is a restaurant and bar, but the menus are fairly limited.  There is not a swimming pool either.  In no way could it be viewed as anything but functional!  But it is clean and the staff are very friendly and helpful.
