The Volcano House Hotel is located in the Volcano National Park, just inside the park gates, and in a great location to visit and to view the Volcanos' activities, even from the hotel! Set at over 4000m above sea level, overlooking the Halema'uma'u Crater at the summit of Mount Kilauea, Volcano house is one of the oldest hotels in Hawaii. It has just had a complete 3 year renovation and refurbishment, but still kept its rustic, homely lodge-style charm, and now provides high quality accommodation in their 33 historic guest rooms, as well as the new camper cabins and camping sites in the Namakanipaio Campground.
The building was completely stripped during the refurbishment, and nearly 3 years of construction provided a new building that has been upgraded and strengthened to withstand higher level siesmic activity than the previous building, and now adheres to very high, strict guidlines that have been implemented by local government and the National Parks Service. Although there had never been any serious quake damage or injuries before, the new building is designed to tolerate almost anything Kilauea can throw at it!
Volcano House Hotel offers 33 Historic Guest Rooms with 3 catagory grades; Rainforest View, Volcano Crater View, and Deluxe Volcano Crater View Guest Rooms. The Rainforest View and Volcano View Guest Rooms offer between 256-260sqft/24sqm of space, with 1 King or 2 Queen beds, ensuite bathroom with dressing area, dressing table/desk with chair, and views over the tropical rainforest or the volcano crater. The Deluxe Volcano View Guest Rooms are slightly larger, up to 312sqft/29sqm, and offer 1 King bed, ensuite bathroom with dressing area, dressing table/work desk with chair, easy chair, and stunning views of the crater. The lower ground floor rooms also have an outside patio leading onto the lawns and gardens, and some rooms offer an extra sofabed.
There is also the Namakanipaio Camper cabins, which are located nearby, which offer charming little 1 room wooden cabins with 1 double and 2 single bunkbeds, all with linens provided, electric lighting and an outdoor firepit and BBQ grill. This is more like camping-without-the-tent, than a hotel, as there are no electrical outlets in the cabins, and the toilet and bathroom facilities are shared in a newly refurbished bathroom block, with hot showers with complimentary soap and separate toilets with supplied toilet paper. However, if you are into tents, they also have a campsite where you can pitch your own, or hire one of their ready-pitched tents, with double mattress inside
Dining at the Volcano House is offered at the new The Rim Restaurant, which is open from 7.00am til 10.30am and 5.00-9.00pm, and serves a fresh buffet breakfast and a varied dinner menu, offering fresh local seafood, locally sourced meats and fresh vegetables, served with a good selection of wines and other drinks. Uncle George's Lounge serves light lunches, as well as a vast array of beers, wines, spirits and cocktails, to enjoy with the view. Both Uncle George's and The Rim have stunning outlooks over the crater and surrounding landscape.
Onsite there is The Art of Hawaii gift shop, which supports local craftspeople and artisans by selling local Hawaiian art, jewellry and crated items, all made by local people. They also sell a selection of clothing, hats, souvenirs, snacks and drinks for passing visitors and guests alike. There is the greatroom with its huge fireplace and comfy sofas and chairs to relax in, and pleasant gardens overlooking the volcano. At present, there is no internet connection, but we are sure this will come in time.
The Volcano House was always in an amazing position in the Volcano National Park, but with its recent upgrade, now offers a more luxurious experience as well. This property is absolutely ideal when spending 1 or more days exploring all the park has to offer.

Currently, there are no non-stop flights from the UK to the Hawaiian Islands, mainly due to the distance from the UK. The most convenient way of getting there is via a connection at an American or Canadian city, and the following is a list of the Airlines that offer through service to the islands and the routes they operate.
Air Canada: Offer daily connecting flights to Honolulu from Heathrow via Toronto or Vancouver
United Airlines: Offer through services with same day connections from Birmingham, Manchester, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Heathrow via Newark, Washington, Los Angeles and San Francisco to Honolulu (Oahu), Maui, Kauai and Kona (Hawaii Big island). They also offer non-stop flights from Chicago and Denver to Honolulu
American Airlines: Offer through services with same day connections from Heathrow via Los Angeles to Maui, Kauai and Kona (Hawaii Big island). They also offer non-stop flights from Dallas to Honolulu and Maui
Alaska Airlines: Offer flights from Seattle and Portland to Honolulu, Maui, Hawaii Big Island and Kauai, which can be used in conjunction with other airlines from the UK
Delta Airlines: Currently, no Delta flights from the UK make a same day connection to their Hawaiian flights, so an overnight stay will be required. They offer non-stop flights to Honolulu (Oahu) from Atlanta, Los Angeles, Detroit and Salt Lake City, and to Maui from Los Angeles and Salt Lake City
US Airways: Currently, no US Airways flights from the UK make a same day connection to their flights to the Hawaiian islands, so an overnight stay will be required. They operate non-stop flights from Phoenix to Maui, Honolulu, (Oahu), Kauai and Hawaii Big Island.
Hawaiian
Airlines: They provide a large range of flights from
cities in the American West to Honolulu and Maui. Their flights
from Los Angeles, San Francisco, Oakland, San Jose, Las Vegas, San
Diego, Seattle, Portland and Phoenix can be used in connection with
other carriers flights from the UK. They also provide a weekly
service between Honolulu and Tahiti, currently operating on a
Saturday/Sunday schedule.
Korean Air:
Offer a very competitive price for flights to Honolulu from
Heathrow via Seoul in South Korea, but it is the long way
around.
Domestic Flights around the
Islands
There are currently three domestic airlines operating in Hawaii; Island Air, Hawaiian Airlines and Go. They operate an extensive domestic flight network covering all the islands, with frequent and regular departures operating between 6am and 9 pm
There are a number of aircraft and helicopters available for
private charters throughout Hawaii, so arranging charters between
the main and/or outer islands is very easy. At this time, there are
no seaplanes available for chartering in the Hawaiian chain, which
is a little disappointing for flying boat fans!
Airline Seat Maps
For most airlines, we can pre-reserve seats for you once your flight booking is confirmed, and will do so as a matter of course. If you would like to have a look as a seat plan for your aircraft, check the airlines' own website, or one of the best independent websites for this is Seat Guru, which is part of the Tripadvisor group.
