Mangareva is a high island with its highest peak of just under
1500 feet to be found on Mount Duff. The other main high
island is Taravai, whichi is next to Mangareva. The other
seven islands are ranged around Mangareva, and all are protected by
a crescent shaped reef, which is to the southeast of
Mangareva. It's on one of the motus that make up this reef
that the airport is to be found.
Currently there are no hotels in the Gambier, accommodation is
offered in pensions. There are a number to choose from but
our recommendation would be Chez Biana & Benoit, situated on
the mountain side overlooking the town of Rikitea and its
bay. The location offers its guests truly stunning views that
will greatly enhance the experience of the stay. The
accommodation is offered either in rooms within the main house, or
in four bungalows. The rooms in the main house have
shared bathroom facilities, while the bungalows offer private
bathroom facilities. The accommodation in the main house
is like any pension, in that you are living in their family
home.
The bungalows are apart from the main house and are built on a
terrace on the side of the mountain. They are made of local
materials and are simply furnished and decorated with ceiling
fans. You will not need air-conditioning, for being much
further south than Tahiti, the islands are warm but very rarely
humid. All meals are taken at the pension as there is nowhere
else to eat.
So, if you can afford the time and you would like to
enjoy a way of life that most French Polynesians have never
experienced, then a visit to Mangareva is a must.
