Discovered by Captain Cook in 1777
and with a link with British naval history, it was on Tubuai
or Tupua'i, that the Bounty crew, Fletcher Christian and the
other mutineers first settled after their first departure from
Tahiti. However, things did not work out for them there, so
after less than six months they packed up and sailed back to Tahiti
and then onto Pitcairn Island, their final home.
On these islands, archaelogists
have found the first ruins of open-air stone temples and large-size
stone Tiki (statues) similar to those found on the Marquesas and
Easter Island, also some earthwork fortresses that are identical to
ones found in New Zealand. These findings have helped to
chart the passage of the Polynesian nation across the Pacific
Ocean.
Despite there being very few
beaches, the island is ideal for clients looking for a very quiet
location to retreat, read and ralax. There are currently no
quality hotels although good accommodaton is provided in a range of
pensions.
