Taha'a
Taha'a, The Vanilla island, is the
fifth island in the Society Islands chain sharing the same lagoon
and coral reef with the neighbouring island, of Raiatea. Taha'a is
the most mountainous of the Society islands, so much so that there
is not enough flat coastal plain land for an airport to be built so
one has to fly to Raiatea, then take a boat transfer.
The islands' mountainous scenery is
truly spectacular, being dominated by Mount Ohiri, which rises to
almost two thousand feet (598 meters) in the centre of the
island. A 4-wheel jeep safari to it's summit affords the
adventurous with a wonderful visually experience which includes a
not-to-distant view of Bora Bora.
Taha'a is called the Vanilla
Island, because it grows 70-80% of the vanilla grown in French
Polynesia, and the wonderful aroma perfumes the breeze all
around the island. Take some home with you, keep in an
airtight container, and use in your cooking, to remind you of your
trip every time you use them.

daily Communal Tax that is paid in Taha'a, which is paid directly
to the hotel upon the guests' departure. This is currently
200 XPF (Pacific Francs - roughly EUR1.70/£1.60) which is paid per
person, per day.
